How to Source Electric Motors from China: a Buyer's Step-by-Step Guide
Where China's motor clusters are, how to shortlist factories, what to send in an RFQ, and how samples, tooling, payment and shipping usually work.

1. Know where the industry is
China has built electric motors at scale for over 30 years, and each region specialises. The Pearl River Delta (Shenzhen, Dongguan, Foshan, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Jiangmen) leads in micro DC and gear motors, BLDC motors with drivers, steppers, servos, linear motors and home-appliance motors, with magnets, laminations, PCBA and test equipment within an hour's drive. The Yangtze River Delta (Changzhou, Ningbo, Shanghai) is strong in steppers, BLDC and servos; Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Hebei and Fujian produce most large three-phase induction motors.
2. Shortlist three to five factories
Start from makers that already build your motor type and size, then check each one through official channels: its own website (not only a marketplace storefront), a landline, a company email domain, and its business registration. A factory that designs its own windings and tooling can modify a motor; a trading company usually cannot.
- Ask for the datasheet, outline drawing and a recent test report of the closest standard model.
- Ask which processes are in house: winding, magnetising, balancing, end-of-line testing.
- Prefer factories with ISO 9001 and, for automotive, IATF 16949.
3. Send a complete RFQ
Quotes are only comparable when every factory answers the same specification. Include the operating point rather than just a power rating.
- Supply voltage, rated torque and speed, peak torque and duty cycle (S1, S2 or S3).
- Mounting, shaft, cable or connector, and space envelope (a sketch helps).
- Feedback and control: Hall sensors, encoder resolution, built-in driver, interface.
- Environment: temperature, IP rating, noise limit, required life in hours.
- Annual volume, first-order quantity, target markets and certifications.
4. Samples, tooling and approval
Catalogue samples usually ship in one to two weeks; modified samples in two to four. New laminations, housings or gear parts need tooling, often charged separately and refunded above an agreed volume. Test the samples on your own load, freeze the specification and drawing, and agree the acceptance tests before mass production — then ask for a pilot batch.
5. Payment, inspection and shipping
A common pattern is 30 % deposit and 70 % before shipment, quoted EXW or FOB Shenzhen/Shanghai. Book a pre-shipment inspection for the first orders (dimensions, no-load current and speed, hi-pot, noise) and keep the factory's end-of-line test records. Most motors ship as general cargo; motors packed with lithium batteries need dangerous-goods handling.
