Armature Winding Machine (flyer)
AutomatedSemi-automatic
Winds the coils of brushed-motor armatures with one or two flyers and hooks the wire onto the commutator tangs between coils.

Selection criteria
Number of flyers, slot and commutator-bar count range, wire size range, hooking reliability, changeover time.
Supply chain
Dongguan and Shenzhen motor-line builders supply most small-DC-motor armature equipment, usually as complete lines (insulation, winding, fusing, turning). Trial-wind your own rotor and check where the wire hooks on the commutator, since it decides fusing quality.
Buyer FAQ
- Single-flyer or double-flyer armature winder?
- A double-flyer machine winds two coils at once on opposite sides of the armature, roughly doubling output and balancing the rotor better, but it suits armatures with even slot counts. Single-flyer machines are cheaper and more flexible for low volumes and odd slot counts. Confirm the slot count, commutator bar count and wire range (often about 0.08–1.0 mm) cover all your rotors.
- How should I accept an armature winding machine?
- Run your own armatures continuously, at least several hundred pieces, and check turn count via coil resistance balance (typically within ±3–5 %), wire tension, enamel damage and hooking position on every tang. Then fuse a sample and check the joints. Record hooking failures per thousand, since missed hooks are the main cause of stoppages.
- What about changeover and lead time?
- Each armature needs its own tooling (winding formers, collets, flyer guides), and changeover typically takes from under an hour to several hours depending on the design. Servo-driven indexing and hooking make changeover easier than cam-driven machines. Allow several weeks to a few months for delivery, and specify tooling for each rotor in the order.
