Linear Motor & Voice-coil Motor

Iron-core / ironless / tubular linear motors · voice-coil actuators · direct drive

Direct-drive actuators that produce force along a straight line with no ball screw, belt or gearbox. The main reference here is the iron-core flat linear motor: a coil unit (forcer) of laminated iron core with concentrated three-phase coils, potted in thermally conductive epoxy with Hall and thermal sensors, running over a magnet track of NdFeB magnets bonded to a steel back plate. Ironless U-channel motors put an epoxy coil blade between two magnet rows for zero cogging and no attraction force; tubular motors use a round magnet rod inside a cylindrical coil stack; voice-coil motors move a single-phase coil in a magnetic gap over a short stroke (typically a few to 50 mm). Used in semiconductor and electronics equipment, laser and CNC machines, 3D printers, automation stages and medical devices.

Structure

NSNSNSNSNS
Electrical steel coreCopper windingN-pole magnetSteel back plate (magnet track)
Topology
Flat iron-core linear synchronous motor; a typical forcer section has 9 coils over 8 magnet poles (9-coil / 8-pole), repeated for longer forcers; magnet track in modular lengths
Coil unit (forcer)
0.35–0.5 mm electrical-steel laminations, stacked and bonded or welded; concentrated coils on the teeth, three-phase star connection; fully potted in thermally conductive epoxy on an aluminium mounting plate
Magnet track
Rectangular NdFeB magnets with alternating poles, bonded on a steel back plate at a pole pitch of typically 16–30 mm (often skewed to reduce cogging); stainless-steel cover or epoxy coating
Sensors
Digital or analogue Hall sensors for commutation (optional); PTC thermistor and / or KTY / PT1000 temperature sensor embedded in the winding; position feedback from an external linear encoder
Air gap & attraction
Mechanical air gap typically 0.5–1.0 mm, set by the user's linear guides; magnetic attraction between forcer and track is typically 4–8 times the continuous force
Ironless & tubular variants
Ironless U-channel: epoxy-encapsulated coil blade between two magnet rows on a U-shaped steel yoke; no cogging, no attraction force, lower force density. Tubular: coil stack in a round housing over a stainless tube filled with magnets; no guide-based air gap setting
Voice-coil motor (VCM)
Single-phase moving coil (bobbin-wound, often self-bonding wire) in the radial gap of a magnet and steel-yoke assembly; cylindrical or flat; stroke typically 2–50 mm; no commutation, near-linear force vs current, no cogging
Insulation & electrical
Class F (155 °C) or H; DC bus up to 600 V for linear motors (24–48 V typical for VCM); shielded high-flex power and sensor cables

Assembly process

12 main assembly steps. Each step lists its key equipment and instruments, their main suppliers, and the technical control points.

  1. 1

    Forcer lamination stamping & stacking

Electrical steel is punched into comb-shaped (straight-tooth) laminations in a progressive die and stacked to the forcer width, then fixed by interlocking, bonding or laser welding; long forcers are built from repeated core sections.

    Magnet track bonding

Pre-magnetised NdFeB magnets are placed one by one on the ground steel back plate in a non-magnetic pitch jig with alternating polarity, bonded with structural adhesive and cured. Operators use non-magnetic tools and safety fixtures because of the very high attraction forces.

Track cover, sealing & magnetic check

The magnet surface is covered with a thin stainless-steel cover or epoxy coating and sealed at the edges against coolant and swarf; the finished track is scanned for flux density along its length. Where magnets are bonded unmagnetised, the track is magnetised with a multi-pole fixture before this check.

    Voice-coil motor assembly

For VCMs, magnets and steel yoke (or pole piece) are bonded concentrically, and the coil on its bobbin or holder is fitted into the gap with guide bushings or flexures; the gap concentricity determines friction and force uniformity.

Export certification

Motor for high-voltage drives: Covers motors sold in low-voltage and high-voltage versions. Versions driven above 75 V DC / 50 V AC (e.g. from 220 V AC drives) fall under low-voltage-directive safety rules and need reinforced insulation and hipot evidence.
