Manufacturing overview · Typical process

57 mm Two-phase Hybrid Stepper Motor (NEMA 23)

NEMA 23 · 1.8° step · 0.5–3 N·m holding torque · 41–112 mm length

The workhorse stepper for CNC routers and engravers, packaging and labelling machines, textile machines and general automation. Same hybrid principle as the 42 mm size, but with currents of 2–4 A, stack lengths up to about 100 mm and an 8 mm or 1/4" shaft, so heat, rotor rigidity and bearing load matter more. Long versions use two rotor sections, each with its own magnet.

Assembly process

11 main assembly steps. Each step lists its key equipment and instruments, their main suppliers, and the technical control points.

  1. 1

    Lamination stamping & interlocking

Stator and rotor laminations are punched in progressive dies, including the small stator teeth and the 50 rotor teeth, and interlocked in-die into stacks. Both rotor cups use the same lamination.

    • ▪Stack length and perpendicularity — Stack length ±0.1 mm; end faces square to the boreCheck: Height gauge and square; first piece and sampling
  2. 2

    Stator insulation

Larger stators are usually insulated with moulded end plates plus slot film; epoxy powder coating is also used. The bore and tooth tips are kept free of insulation so the air gap is not reduced.

    Technical control points:

    • ▪Bore free of insulation — Bore diameter in tolerance; nothing protruding past the tooth tipsCheck: Plug gauge; 100%
    • ▪Insulation of the insulated core — No breakdown at the specified test voltage (e.g. 1.5 kV)Check: Hipot with conductive brush or foil electrode; sampling
  3. 3

    Winding

The two phases are needle-wound directly onto the 8 stator poles. 8-lead versions wind each phase as two separate halves so they can be connected in series or parallel. Heavier wire than the 42 mm size needs higher tension and careful layering at the slot opening.

  4. 4

    Lead termination

Coil ends are soldered to flying leads and sleeved, or to a rear PCB with a connector. Solderable enamelled wire is stripped by the solder heat; for larger wire sizes, mechanical or chemical stripping may be needed.

Export certification

Low-voltage motor without electronics: Assumes a low-voltage motor (up to 48 V) without built-in electronics, exported as a component. An integrated driver or the end use (medical, automotive…) changes the requirements.
